1964 – Summer, Atlantic City, NJ

The summer of 64’ remains forever burned into my memory as the place where it all began. I sit slumped against a chain, dangling my legs over the edge of the pier, listening to Steve swindle an unsuspecting pretty woman out of close to fifty dollars. He and I are thick as thieves and closer than any brother can ever imagine. We are survivors of a broken home. We made a pact running away together to escape our brutal father who beat both of us relentlessly. Our mothers are sisters, but we share the same father, which really messes with your head. Our family does that.

In a screwed up world we are not only brothers but also cousins. Our home now is New Jersey – Atlantic City, our playground. To reduce the complications of our relationship, we refer to each other as brother, as opposed to cousin. We get away with it since we possess our Father’s eyes – an unusual shade of Lavender-grey.

I’m still three, four tomorrow, but Steve is ten years old, and we are fugitives. Living on the streets means having to steal and cheat our way into the pockets of unsuspecting people. Steve is very good at card tricks and despite the giggles from the pretty woman who just lost a fifty to a couple of vagabond kids, she doesn’t sound terribly disappointed. She’s probably rich!

During our travels, we have come across many wealthy and highly influential people, but none as influential as the men who controlled the world of politics. Like ants, swarming to gather remnants of sweet treats, people gathered to attend the National Democratic Convention at Boardwalk Hall. The former President’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy, the Attorney General, is rumored to be among such influential guests. He means nothing to me so long as Steve can get me something to eat. I’m starving.

Conning this pretty woman is our reality – our struggle for survival and the difference between sleeping under a bridge hungry again, and a nice warm bed with a full stomach. We have to do anything to survive.

I glance over my shoulder to see the pretty woman still giggling like a girl, and roll my eyes. My stomach growls and I scowl at her, wishing she would hurry up and leave. I want to eat. I didn’t know how much money Steve has left from the pretzel and milkshake breakfast we shared, but hope there is enough for at least a hotdog each and maybe an ice-cream.

The pretty woman catches me glaring at her and she smiles sweetly. She looks like an angel, so clean and pretty.
